Community Dig 2023

Hyde, Winchester August 26 to 29!

Hyde900 will once again be putting on their annual community dig on the site of Hyde Abbey, the last known resting place of Alfred the Great. Previous digs have uncovered the remains of the church and cloisters in the gardens of willing residents, who live in what was the Inner Close of the abbey. Finds include many materials from the construction of the abbey, which was largely destroyed following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. This year we hope to uncover more of the abbey buildings as well as a continuation of the 12th century culvert that was the highlight of  last year’s dig.
