'Treasures of Hyde Abbey' Exhibition (2010)

In 2010, Hyde900 commemorated the 900th year since the foundation of Hyde Abbey with a 'Treasures of Hyde Abbey' exhibition at Winchester Discovery Centre, staged by Winchester City Council’s Museums Service with the support of generous sponsors and a £50,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

In addition to displaying finds from excavations in the local area, this exhibition reunited some of the treasures of Hyde Abbey for the first time since its dissolution in 1538:

The Liber Monsterii de Hyda (record of Hyde Abbey’s links with the Anglo-Saxon royal family and charters recording their gifts of land)
The Liber Vitae ('Book of Life') of New Minster and Hyde Abbey - a medieval register documenting the daily life of New Minster and (after 1110) of Hyde Abbey
13th century Abbot of Hyde's crosier from the Victoria and Albert Museum
Breviary and psalter from the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford

Treasures of Hyde AbbeyThis catalogue acts as a memento to the Treasures of Hyde Abbey exhibition, held in The Gallery at Winchester Discovery Centre from 6 March to 2 May 2010. It provides additional information about each of the main treasures borrowed for the exhibition, with the historical context provided by Professor Barbara Yorke of the University of Winchester who was the academic advisor to the exhibition team. Noted landscape architect and alumni of Winchester College Kim Wilkie rounds off the catalogue with an account of the creation of Hyde Abbey Garden, and the endeavour of Winchester’s community to share the memory of this great abbey church.
